It’s Monday morning and I just dread getting out of bed, much less doing my daily exercise routine. I lay a couple more minutes, debating whether I should get up and get it over with or just simply lay back down again, health and fitness be darned. 

 

“Should I skip it?”

 

“I definitely should. I deserve it. This is me rewarding myself for being so consistent these past few weeks!”

 

That was my thought flow justifying why I could get out of exercising that morning. I was about to head back to bed when guilt hit me like a ton of bricks. What was I thinking? I’ve been doing so good the last couple of weeks! Stopping today will mean I am permitting myself to stop just because I don’t feel like it. And so I let out a long exhale, put on my workout clothes, and headed for the gym. Exercise means consistency and progress, after all. Without that, I might as well not exercise at all!

Instead of focusing on the negatives, we can always try emphasizing the positives, like being able to lift even the lightest of weights or reaching only a kilometer when jogging. The smallest things we do everyday contribute to our goals, and achieving our goals, no matter how long, is what matters in the end. 

 

We remind ourselves why we started this journey in the first place. Whether it’s for health reasons or simply a desire for self-improvement, keeping our purpose at the forefront will help keep us motivated. Embracing a new perspective and adopting a more positive outlook will help us achieve our fitness aspirations even on days when we feel uninspired and lazy, and believe me, there will be days like this.

Healing From The Loss Of A Pet

I lost my first dog at nine, he was a shoodle or a shih poo, if you may (a cross between a Shih tzu and a Poodle) and I called him Cookie. Cookie was the shortest and most energetic dog I ever had – always running around the house on his tiny light brown paws and pouncing on people whenever he gets the chance. Our family had him for eight years and he’s been a huge part of my childhood. At the time, I haven’t fully grasped the concept of death yet. It was my first experience dealing with death and it was a traumatic one to say the least. I kept expecting for Cookie to run around days after his death. I kept asking my mom what time Cookie would wake up from his nap. I was so convinced that he was just over at the vet, regaining his strength and waiting for me to pick him up. The permanence of death hasn’t dawned on me yet. I didn’t watch when he was buried and I wish I had. I wish I took more pictures of him as well.

 

Losing a pet is a heartbreaking experience. For many of us, our pets are an integral part of our family, offering us companionship, comfort, and unconditional love. When they pass away, it can be incredibly challenging to come to terms with the loss and it’s natural to feel a wide range of emotions. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been taught by everyone and everything around me that I should always strive for big things. Be a doctor, a lawyer, a millionaire. And it made sense to me, because if you’re going to dream, why not dream big? And so, I lived like that for many years. Until I found myself feeling unfulfilled. It was as if I was just waiting for life to get good, I wasn’t really living it. I felt like I was always chasing after something. A dream, a goal that I have to reach so I can finally be happy. But what if I don’t? What if I spend the rest of my life chasing something that might turn out to be meaningless?

So, I started to reevaluate myself and how I’ve been living my life. What are the things that make me happy? What are the things that give me purpose? What are the things that actually matter? If I become a rich, successful lawyer, would I really be happy for the rest of my days? There’s always the chance that I’ll become miserable; stuck in a profession that I might actually hate. The thought scared me, wasting many years just to end up unhappy. Then it dawned on me, the answer is actually very simple. Taking a stroll in the park, reading a good book, listening to music, and spending time with my loved ones. These things make me happy and what they all have in common, is that they are almost within my reach. Unlike a five-story mansion or a flying convertible, these are things that can make me happy, and I can experience them every single day.

When I look at it this way, it seems silly to deprive myself and choose to be all gloomy and miserable.

Happiness is Living in the Moment

Life may be tough but that doesn’t mean we can’t find joy and fulfillment in it! There are plenty of ways to pursue happiness and feel satisfied with our lives.

For starters, we can pay atention to the things we’re grateful for each day- even the little things like a warm cup of coffee or a kind text message from a friend. These small moments add up and remind us of all the good things around us. Another tip is prioritizing self-care. We can make time for activities that make us happy, whether it’s taking a relaxing bath or going on a hike in nature. We should remember that taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and mentally is crucial for overall well-being.

Lastly, we shouldn’t forget about pursuing meaningful relationships with others. By connecting with loved ones regularly and trying out new social experiences to expand our networks, we can essentially build a strong support system that combats loneliness and keeps life exciting. The thing is, happiness may seem elusive at times but sometimes, these small doses of dopamine can make us feel closer to attaining it.

Procrastinating Happiness Will Be Our Doom

It’s so silly to think that we procrastinate even our happiness.

“Well, of course, I feel miserable, it’s only Tuesday! I can’t wait till it’s Friday. Then I can finally have fun!”

It’s as if Friday is a magical day, a portal that instantly transports us to Happy Land. If this was our mental cycle all year-round, we don’t have to do the math to figure out we’re miserable for most of the 365 days! It’s a bit senseless to wait for a particular day to start enjoying life, don’t you think?

I realized I did have 24 hours in a day and in spite of the many many deadlines, I still have time to enjoy life everyday. As a result, I’m much happier. I’m still busy most days, but the big difference is now I know that no matter how hectic things can be, I should still find ways to keep myself happy. I should give myself a few hours or even just minutes of respite and do the little things I enjoy. These small moments sprinkle little bits of happiness throughout my day and sometimes, that’s all that matters.

Excitement Leads to Happiness

It’s always nice to have something to look forward to. It can be something big, like our birthdays, a new gaming console, or maybe a huge paycheck coming our way. But most times, it can be little things like meeting our best friend for coffee, hearing our favorite song on the radio, or eating our favorite food for lunch. Since getting excited about stuff always makes our day better and a lot faster, we can just decide for ourselves to experience that feeling everyday, right?

We can try to incorporate “exciting” things into our everyday routine. Things that we enjoy- things that make our days a bit more special and bearable. When we look forward to the good things ahead, we can pull through each day and realize that we don’t have to wait for Christmas because we can make the “exciting” things in our lives happen everyday.

Doing What Makes Me Happy- TODAY

Today, I chose to wake up with a spring in my step and a smile on my face. Why, you ask? Because today, I choose to do what makes me happy! Whether it’s dancing around my bedroom to music that sets my soul on fire or taking a long walk outside to soak up the sunshine and fresh air- I’ll embrace the simple things in life that bring me joy. I believe that happiness is not just an emotion but also a state of mind. So, when the going gets tough, I try to remind myself of all the good things in life and focus on making myself happy. And guess what? It works like magic! This doesn’t mean everything has to go perfectly for me everyday-because let’s be real, that’s not just possible. But what it does mean is choosing to see the positive side of things and consciously pursuing activities and experiences that make me feel alive.

Life is too short to waste time being miserable or constantly chasing after fleeting moments of happiness. In this pursuit of happiness we call life- it’s important to remember that true contentment comes from within us- by embracing who we are, flaws and all – alongside finding those little joys along our journey can lead us down paths full of smiles and laughter, hugs, love, light, and so much more! If you’re feeling lost among daily routines, stop and take time to breathe deeply and start asking yourself, “how can I find joy in this moment?” You might surprise yourself with how many answers come flooding through your mind!

Happiness Isn’t a Destination

Happiness isn’t something we wait for or work hard to achieve. Instead of constantly searching for happiness, we should focus on enjoying the ride. Is it possible to reduce our expenses without feeling like we’re sacrificing the things we love? Well, the answer is yes, definitely! We simply have to put on our thinking caps and get creative! To begin with, we have to get real with ourselves. We have to take a look at our expenses and ask ourselves-what do we really need? Maybe it’s time to cut back on some things that aren’t essential. Do we really need that monthly subscription to a magazine we never really read? Do we need all those streaming services? Probably not. As long as we keep in mind the essential things, we can never drown in our expenses.

 

We also have to get creative. There are so many ways to save money without feeling like we’re sacrificing anything. Maybe it’s carpooling with a friend or finding free events in our communities. As long as we’re resourceful, we can find ways to have fun and save at the same time. Cooking at home more often is something we can do creatively- not only is it healthier, but it’s also much much cheaper. There’s always something satisfying about cooking a delicious meal at home and the pride that comes from knowing that we did these things by ourselves without breaking the bank.

 

We can also find affordable alternatives. Just because something is expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. Maybe there’s a cheaper brand of our favorite product that’s just as good, or maybe it’s time to switch to a more affordable service provider. We can always do research and find ways to save without relinquishing the things that make our life better.

 

Lastly, we can always cut back on impulse purchases. We’ve all been there-we’re at the store and we see something shiny and new that we just have to have. But before we buy these things, we have to ask ourselves- do we really need this? Will it bring me long-term happiness? If the answer is yes, then go ahead, but we also have to remember that as long as we’re in the department store and we see something we like, we’ll always have the tendency to justify the things we buy even if in reality, we don’t really need it!

 

Getting rid of financial stress requires a holistic approach that addresses the root causes and symptoms of anxiety. We can always take control of our finances and money doesn’t have to be a burden that keeps us up at night and prevents us from being happy. Sometimes, all it takes is a shift in mindset where we tell ourselves, “I’ve got this, I’ll get through it somehow”, and we can keep going and keep digging for solutions to our financial problems. We have to remember that it’s not always going to be this way, but sometimes, it has to be- it’s the way the world works, after all. As long as we remember that we’re the captain of our own bank accounts, we can live a more stress-free life and enjoy the benefits of financial stability and security later on.

As someone who has written and experienced love, heartbreak and the many complexities of human relationships, I know just how important friendship is. Our friends are the people we turn to for support, laughter, and a listening ear when we need it most. They calm our storms, keep our demons at bay, and give us peace in this unrelenting world. They are the ones who have seen us at our best and our worst, and who love us all the same. They are simply angels on earth.

But what happens when those friendships become toxic? When the people we once relied on for comfort and guidance now bring us nothing but negativity and drama? I’ve had friendships come and go before and I never really did fully understand why these things happen. I didn’t always understand why people grow apart or simply stop talking, but once I realized that there might be underlying reasons, red flags we don’t see with the naked eye, I recognized that It’s not always easy to perceive and accept the warning signs of a toxic friendship. Nonetheless, they are there-lurking beneath the surface, waiting to reveal themselves. These are warning signs that may not seem like a big deal at first, but over time, they can cause serious damage to our emotional well-being.

 

1. Jealousy and competition

Jealousy is natural even in the closest of relationships-it’s part of being human, after all. The thing about jealousy is, it gets ugly real fast. It festers like an untreated wound and spreads throughout our minds and actions. It poisons our intentions and leaves us bitter and competitive toward the people we care about.

When friendships turn sour, we might feel like our friends minimize our achievements and successes or even try to “one-up” our experiences. When they struggle to celebrate our wins and talk about themselves instead, we tend to internally brush it off, give them the benefit of the doubt, and tell ourselves “it’s not a big deal anyways”. But it is! Every good moment is worth celebrating, and if our friends can’t celebrate it with us, and make us feel good about ourselves from time to time, then who can?

 

2. Lack of respect for boundaries

Boundaries are like moats around our personal castles, designed to keep out the bad stuff and let in only the good! They protect our mental health, emotional well-being, and sanity. When friends cross the line from supportive to suffocating, from caring to controlling, it’s time to wave the red flag high and take action.

A telling sign of disrespect for our boundaries might mean constantly demanding our time and attention. It’s honestly draining when they expect us to drop everything and be available to them 24/7, even when we have other commitments. Don’t get me wrong, we’ll always be there for them! However, we deserve to have a life of our own that doesn’t revolve around them, and we deserve that boundary, most of all. Some more subtle signs of disrespect also include: not taking no for an answer, sharing personal information and secrets without our consent, and ignoring our requests for space and alone time. The discomfort in our gut should be the first sign that something isn’t right and a talk between our friends is a must for us to restore our boundaries.

 

3. Always putting us down

Good friends are the wind beneath our wings. They lift us up and make us feel good about ourselves no matter where we are in life. If our friends constantly put us down or make negative comments about our appearance, feelings, and dispositions, it’s always a sign of toxicity. We always know these types of friends. The ones who can never resist making snide comments about our hair, outfit, or life choices. At first, it might seem harmless enough, and maybe we might even find it funny. But over time, those little jabs can add up and leave us feeling conscious and downright insecure about ourselves.

Some signs we can look out for would be: backhanded compliments, criticism of choices, comparison to others, and downplaying our successes. This behavior is something easily absorbed and before we know it, we’ve already become insecure people who put others down as well! Nipping it in the bud and confronting our friends about it is the best course of action for a longer and healthier friendship ahead.

4. Only contacting us when they need something

These are the “fair-weather friends” who only seem to contact us when they need a favor or a shoulder to cry on and all the other days of the year, they go AWOL. We always tend to brush it off by telling ourselves, “they are busy, it’s only natural”, but the truth is, the relationship becomes one-sided when we’re expected to be there for them but they’re missing we need them. Might as well call it a therapy session instead of friendship and we should be paid by the hour, right? Just kidding.

But in all seriousness, we have to confront our friends who simply don’t show interest in our lives and refuse to show gratitude for our help. When they expect us to be at their beck and call, it’s time to evaluate the friendship and see if this kind of relationship is something we deserve.

 

5. Gossiping and talking behind our backs

Oh, the juicy world of gossip. It’s a guilty pleasure we’ve all indulged in at one point or another. But when that gossip is about us, it’s not so fun anymore, especially when it’s coming from a friend. Gossiping and talking behind our backs is one of the most insidious friendship red flags out there- it’s sneaky, hurtful, and hard to spot. After all, it’s not like our friends are going to come right out and tell us they’re talking about us behind our backs. So, how can we tell who’s the Gossip Girl of our group?

The first telling sign is quite obvious- they’re always dishing on other people. If they’re gossiping about others, chances are, they’re gossiping about us too, and not in a good way! Another sign would be them acting strange around us. If they’re talking behind our backs, they might act weird or avoid us when we’re around because they’re worried we might find out. Finally, they are the ones who are quick to judge- they always make negative comments about other people and it’s very likely that they judge us behind our backs, too! It’s difficult to address this kind of behavior especially when we don’t know who spread the gossip and rumors in the first place but one thing we have to remember is to never ever stoop to their level. We don’t have to explain everything to other people and so, as long as we know the truth in ourselves, other people’s opinions won’t matter at all.

 

6. Always canceling plans or making excuses

We all have that one friend who seems to always cancel plans or make excuses for why they can’t hang out. It’s frustrating, it’s annoying, and worst of all, it can make us feel like we’re not a priority in their lives. It’s a friendship red flag that people don’t talk about enough. We always brush it off with, “oh, that’s fine, they’re busy, I get it”. Sure, sometimes things come up and we have to cancel plans, but when it becomes a pattern, that’s when we need to start paying attention. After all, it takes two to tango and if the other one isn’t willing to make efforts for the relationship, then maybe it isn’t worth the time at all!

 

7. Lack of empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others- it’s one of the most important pillars of any relationship, and friendships are no exception! When we have friends who lack empathy, it can make us feel alone, isolated, and even hurt. Dismissing our feelings constantly, trivializing our experiences, and refusing to show compassion are some subtle signs that our friends don’t really empathize with us.

Ideally, we gravitate towards friends who share the same feelings, perceptions, and interests simply because we need comfort and companionship- someone we can turn to when things become unbearable. When we feel unsupported in our endeavors, it can lead to loneliness and it makes us question if they are really friends we would want to stick with during tough times down the road. True friends are there for us in good times and bad, and they show empathy and support when we need it most. We have to remind ourselves that when the going gets tough, real friends won’t get going- they stay and weather storms with us.

 

Approaching a Friend When They Exhibit Red Flag Behavior

No matter how frustrated we are with our friends, we have to remember to always approach them in a thoughtful and constructive manner. Being honest but kind is the first thing we must keep in mind. We use “I” statements to express how their behavior makes us feel and we must avoid playing the blame game or even attacking them upfront, after all, these are people we truly care about and their well-being and growth is also important to us.

We also need to listen to their perspective and give them a chance to explain their outlook and beliefs without any sort of judgment or condescension; who knows, we might just have different opinions and expectations when dealing with situations and complications in life.

Finally, we have to be prepared for different outcomes in the end as our friend may or may not respond positively to the approach. No matter what the result is, remember that it’s for the best because for better or worse, we have aired out our frustrations and it’s up to them to take it or leave it and end the friendship for good. Whatever happens, we have to remind ourselves that we did the right thing and it’s going to be okay.

 

Normalizing Letting Go of Friendships That No Longer Work

I know that letting go of a friendship can be difficult. It’s normal to feel a sense of loss, sadness, and even guilt when we decide to move on from a relationship that was once so important to us. Friendships, like all relationships, are complex and dynamic. Sometimes, they simply run their course or we outgrow each other. It doesn’t mean that the friendship was a failure or that we did anything wrong, it simply means that it’s time to move on and make space for new experiences and relationships. Letting go of a friendship doesn’t have to be a dramatic or painful process. It can be a gradual process of distancing ourselves from them and the dynamics of the relationship. It’s okay to acknowledge that the friendship is no longer serving us and that it’s time to prioritize our own well-being and happiness.

It’s okay to let go of friendships that no longer work, in fact, it’s a normal and healthy part of life. It allows us to make room for new connections and experiences and permits us to find happiness somewhere else. We won’t always share the same paths in life and while it was a beautiful journey together, sometimes paths diverge to let us grow and thrive on our own. We simply have to be kind to ourselves and trust that the right friendships will come along at the right time.

Sometimes, we’re so afraid to flow, to grow, and to move where life takes us and so, we stay in our own fish bowls where it’s familiar and constant. I can’t blame anyone for choosing the latter. After all, familiarity is constant, simple, and manageable. Unlike uncertainty, there aren’t too many surprises with a familiarity that would leave us upset, not too many challenges that would leave us dumbfounded, and so, we go for it every single day.

Uncertainty is something we choose not to face, but it’s there nonetheless. Life, after all, is full of uncertainties- from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, we are faced with decisions and situations that are unpredictable and often beyond our control. But maybe that’s why we stay in dead-end jobs, remain in relationships that no longer serve us, and choose to settle because at the very least, they are familiar and they are things that give us a semblance of control over our own lives. I say semblance because tomorrow is something we can never predict and so, we don’t really have control over our future; but if there is something I know we can manage, it’s how we look at things no matter what happens. We don’t see that there is beauty in uncertainty that we often overlook, especially when it foils our plans in life. Until we take a leap of faith, we won’t realize that there is magic in the unknown that we have yet to find.

We find ourselves replaying past mistakes or berating ourselves for not being “good enough”. We live in a society that often reinforces the idea that we are not good enough, smart enough, or attractive enough- it’s just the way our consumerist world is.

 

When the noise in our heads gets too loud, when our internal critic is unrelenting and harsh, we must practice self-compassion. We treat ourselves with the same kindness, concern, and support that we would offer to a good friend and we love ourselves for the flawed human beings that we are. Self-compassion is a way of acknowledging our own humanity, imperfections, and limitations – it helps us feel calm, connected, and grounded.
